I came across Ralph's Instagram when planning our trip to Amsterdam last month. I was so impressed with his knowledge of history that I booked him for a tour with my two BFFs. My husband and I are seasoned travelers who have done lots of tours with lots of local tour guides. Ralph Deckers is among the top 2 or 3 local guides we've had out of hundreds. He has all the essential qualities of a great local guide: excellent information told in an enthusiastic, relatable way; easy-to-understand English that is almost accent-free; the ability to customize a tour based on the guests' interests and needs; and a genuine intellectual curiosity about people, culture, and history that is contagious. Ralph was able to pivot on a dime when he learned we had already walked through parts of Amsterdam, and he changed the itinerary to other city sections we hadn't seen and were of particular interest to our group of four. He handled our questions exceptionally well and was willing to engage our queries about Dutch politics and attitudes toward international issues. We came away feeling we had learned a lot and made a new friend because he's really someone you want to get to know as a person as well as a guide. Ralph was an excellent guide, teaching us with eloquence and deep knowledge of the country's culture and history - its qualities and quirks.
